LAUNCHING YOUR OWN RAFT

Step 1: Park your car in Tahoe City

There are several FREE places to park your car in Tahoe City. Note: There is NO parking at the River Ranch for rafters - so don't even waste your time.

64 Acres: the parking lot across from Bank of the West and next to the Bridgetender. This is the closest parking lot to the public launch. The access road is on Hwy 89S just south of the 'Y' after the Bridgetender. You will see a smallish brown sign on the side of the road that says 'Truckee River Access'.

From 64 Acres there is a footbridge which crosses the river so that you can easily get your raft, air, coolers, beer, ice and food at Savemart, Shell or Chevron on Hwy 89.

Next to the Chevron: Fairway Drive next to the Chevron gas station has parking on one side of the street and is across the street from where you will launch your raft.

"Beach" Parking lot on 89S: There is a small parking lot on the lake-side of 89 South just past the Bank of the West near the "Y" where you can park your car for free.  There is also road-side parking along 89 South along this section on both sides of the highway and is close to the 64 Acres parking lot and Truckee River public launch access point.

It's best to park as close to the NW side of Tahoe City (close to the light at the "Y") as possible to avoid the traffic thru the main street and to easily access the River.

Step 2: Procure a raft or tube and air

Where to buy your rafts and innertubes in Tahoe City:

  • Willard's Sports Shop (at the light in Tahoe City next to Ace Hardware)
  • Tahoe Dave's (on the lake-side of main street in Tahoe City in the middle of Tahoe City)
  • Lakeview Wine and Spirits (next to Fat Cat at Grove Street in middle of Tahoe City)
  • Swigard's Ace Hardware (at the light in Tahoe City)
  • Safeway grocery store
  • Savemart grocery store
  • Shell gas station
  • Chevron gas station
(Truckee River Taxi does not endorse any specific store)

Where to get air:

  • Chevron offers free air.
  • Willard's Sports Shop and Swigard's Ace Hardware have air with purchase of a raft.
  • Shell gas station has air for $1.

Step 3: Launch your raft or innertube

The public launch area is next to the 64 Acres parking lot on the river. There is a footbridge (next to Front Street Pizza) that crosses the river between Hwy 89 and 64 Acres. Make sure you do not try to launch from the private raft rental company docks.
